I'm running a mildly tuned 1293 with decent headers and right
now am running the exhaust that came with the car. It's basically a
straight thru pipe and is really difficult to hear anything other than
the great sound of the engine. So I'd like to be able to listen to the CD
player or maybe have a conversation without yelling Has anybody used
glass packs on their mini? I know the longer they are the more quiet they
are but having never had them installed was just wondering what you folks
had experienced.
Thanks
I may be hard of hearing as a result of how I have lived. My muffler shop and I having done this together since 1968 have come up with a system carefully bent to work around the shifter ( rod change often ) to the center of the tunnel add 24 inch cherry bomb glass pac from there to hanger front of subframe angle toward left rear add conventional muffler and on to angle to rear subframe hanger straight out the rear a couple inches beyond rear bumper to avoid fumes back in cabin. I did remove a RC40 complete kit in 2000 when I was hauling around a new born in the rear seat of a classic to come up with this system. Performance wise the system has seen 96 mph so it does it's job. Steve (CTR)

What standard muffler did you use after the cherry bomb??
What's wrong with a straight (ie off the shelf) RC40??
After 30 years the resonator box on my RC40 gave up the fight with my rural driveway. The local exhaust shop replaced the resonator with a glass packed straight through modern equivalent (I think it was called a "Hot Dog" - this is probably a proprietary brand name rather than descriptive label).
Many years ago I bought a replacement RC40 but it's still hanging in the shed waiting for the original to finally give up.
You don't need anything Mini-specific; there are lots of glass packed straight through mufflers available. Any exhaust/general vehicle shop should be able size what you need and bend the pipework the make it fit.
I installed a complete RC 40 system on my 85 1000E. I always found it to loud and removed it to come up with something I feel does the job and isn't as loud. I raced go karts, motor bikes, sports and stock cars before mufflers were required. I was drafted into the artillery thank you Uncle Sam. I have heard a lot of noise in my life. I also have a brand new RC 40 hanging on the wall at the shop. I'll put it on something I don't expect to drive. Steve (CTR)
