Timber used on traveller/countryman seats?

I know it is covered in vinyl and not seen and doesn't really matter what I use.

But I need to replace a piece of timber on the rear seat of my 64 Morris Woodie for its restoration as its torn out.(Worse than it looks in pic)
Given I need to buy a piece of timber, I figured getting the original type would be the best option (plus I am a bit pedantic)

Does anyone know what type of timber was used (E.g. I know English ash was used for the external trim timber, I know ply was used for most of this seat))

I had a look on mine, which has the viny torn off. It doesn't look like any of the European timbers that I'm familiar with (admittedly that isn't many).
Its comparatively soft and reddish in colour. To me it looks like one of those tropical hardwoods that are used in things like caravan construction where they want something light and cheap. Meranti comes to mind.

From Tim's discripton, is it Cedar ? does it have a distict smell

Mine smells like 50 year old vinyl.

In the name of science I drilled a hole in it, and it has a nice resinous smell, so its not meranti. It could be cedar.

I think I will go with cedar then

I know the school timber teacher who is an old school cabinet maker, I might run it by him for his opinion on it also (currently sick)
