Nick, That pic doesn't do your car justice. It looks absolutely SUPERB in the flesh.

Anyone wanting to see this car, it should be at our Blyton event.

Yes I'll be there with my car as I've now sorted the few issues I had with it.
Here is a shot out side...wrong ram pipes fitted at this moment ;)

That’s a credit to you Nick, that has soon come together from the pictures I saw previously. Look forward to a nosey round it at Blyton.

This stuff works great for dulling it down

Re: Tartan Red paint code

Just picked up a new paint sample chart for BL to cover Austin - MG for British Leyland. At least for me it creates more confusion/questions:

First of interest to me was that they created a Tartan Red #3. Probably not relevant to Mk1 cars (I don't know if that was ever put on minis or if it was for a different model - just thought it was interesting.

- I have a separate color swatch book from Mark for the Austin 850 (don't know what year it is from) that just makes reference to a "Tartan Red - RD9" so I assume that is the first color they came out with for early cars (still not totally sure from this thread when that date occurred, but from Mark's booklet here Tartan Red #2 was in use at least by 65 - https://mk1-performance-conversions.co.uk/ici_codes.pdf)

- The Tartan Red - RD9 from the Austin 850 booklet does not come even close to matching any of the Tartan Red's in the paint sample page that I just bought. However the Tartan Red - RD9 from the Austin 850 booklet is a perfect match for "Flame Red" in the BL paint sample sheet that I just obtained...

Also, I don't know how to read paint codes, but it strikes me as strange that none of the paint codes on my sheet match the paint codes here: https://mk1-performance-conversions.co.uk/ici_codes.pdf or here: https://mk1-performance-conversions.co. ... codes.html. Maybe a Canada vs UK thing (the sheet I bought is a Canadian distribution)???

Any ideas? Are the paint samples just not longer a good guide as they may have faded/deteriorated?

Also I checked the BL paint samples from 72 against the interior paint on my Tartan Red '66 (which I believe is original paint) and it's a perfect match to the Tartan Red #2 sample. Photo below (although it's impossible for me to get the light and angles correct to show in a photo). So either something is wrong with the Tartan Red (#1) sample on the 850 paint sample or on the paper that has what appears to be a correct #2 paint sample (so that would seem less likely).

Did we ever decide a cutoff date for Tartan Red 1 & 2? I’ve got a ‘64 that is going in for paint next month and need to know!

I’m getting closer to the spray stage for my 1964 Tartan Red too and would also like to know……. Having read all of the thread there seems to be some contradiction on what year it changes as well as did it change from the ‘duller’ to the ‘brighter’.

It appears the lighter/pinker version was until 61 and the Tartan 2 was until 69 or so. After that was yet again another Tartan.

That’s what I read in the earlier posts. Thanks. Have you now sprayed your car and if so what did you finally go with?
