Helphos screen mounted lamp
Has anyone got any info on one of these?
I have recently bought one to fit onto my 1965 Elf.
There appears to be 2 versions, one for a flat screen and one for a curved screen. I have found installation instructions for the later one, but mine appears the earlier one.
I cannot find how to remove the lamp from the screen mounting.
There must be an easy way to do this, but I can’t see how it is done. I am reluctant to force anything on what must be a 60+ year old plastic bodied lamp.
Any info would be great.

Re: Helphos screen mounted lamp
These stick-on screen lamps were fitted to some police cars in the late 60's until into the 70's as I understand it. They weren't very versatile so Lucas came on board with the roof mounted version of the old L576 (?) and then a hand-lamp version of the same. That solved the lack of versitality problems once and for all. Good all round plug-in hand lamps - until the big Dragon lamps came in, in the 80's or so.
Liverpool mini's were all equipped with yellow or red BARDIC lamps with a swivelling red or blue or green lamp filter

Brilliant, thanks for sharing that as spares are such a sensible idea eh?

Also remembered, some early versions (VW perhaps) had 6V bulbs, so check before you wire them up... ask how I discovered that!!!

Re: Helphos screen mounted lamp
These once "must have" lamps disappeared fairly quickly from rallying more or less in parallel with the disappearance of roof lights. The latter was because of changes to Appendix J banning them on International events for 1966 but the former was linked to the "Chesham Rules" for UK rallying that came into force part way through 1966 (but actually date from 1965). That change indirectly made it less important to illuminate sign posts and for the first time ruled out "optional" routing between controls. Those who had them kept them for some time but they soon became rare sights in UK rallying.

Re: Helphos screen mounted lamp
OK got the mounting ring off the lamp without causing damage! Mine is the later type with the 6 levers around the frame of the mounting.
Whilst the lamp is working I was looking at replacing the build with an LED unit. The bulb I believe is 35w with a black cap, the base appears to be a ba15S, but the highest wattage bulb I can find is a 21w LED replacement.
Does anyone know of a more equivalent LED bulb?

Re: Helphos screen mounted lamp
The little pin is a locating pin and is at the top of the suction mounting ring, the lamp then hooks onto the pin and clips over the bottom of the mounting ring. When it was assembled I could not see how it came apart and was nervous about the aged plastic body, but it came apart relatively easy.

The lamp above is a decent option, but is not exactly the same as the original, these were mushroom shaped, with a fairly flat top & are the ones that are NLA.

Glad you got it sorted - I use Glycerine to keep it on the glass, as we did 'back in the day' when they came with a small tube of it.
