Les Leston GP Boss/Horn

Post by timmy201 »

Hi all,

I decided to order a new Nippycars boss as my first one was missing the taper, and my horn spring wasn’t lining up. It looks pretty much identical on the dimensions (although the new screws are slightly bigger and will need the wheel holes to be opened up a bit)

I am still getting the same problem with the horn spring being too short on the LL boss. My Mk1 steering wheel and Springall are fine, but with the old and new LL bosses they both have the spring come up short

I assume my wheel and horn surround are both the usual ones you’d use on a mini, so what am I missing? Is this unusual or are all LL bosses like this?

The boss is on as far as it’ll go, and there is a witness mark where it has contacted the column

Any ideas?

I have had similar issues in the past. I made a small brass spacer to go between the two components, it works fine. took a bit of faffing to get it "just right" though.

The Morris Minor insulator is the same diameter but longer than a Mini one - might be worth a try? You could trim it to suit if too long.
The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who do not possess it.

Thanks Mark. It’s reassuring to know this is normal, but it’s still a little strange to me it doesn’t just fit out of the box

I managed to find the spacer that worked on the old boss and it seems to work ok for the new one (I only used the old boss once before I was advised the boss was missing the critical taper)

Thanks for the idea Simon. I’d rather not change anything on the column/horn spring so I can swap back to other steering wheels. I guess you’d need a longer wire and spring too which isn’t a quick swap

On a side note, were they originally all painted black when new?

All sorted now. Horn works and it looks so good.

There’s a good reason why so many minis have them!

Glad you got sorted. And, yes, it looks brilliant.
