Whilst researching how to locate the solid fuel pipe to accommodate twin carbs, I noticed that a couple of the cars in the Parnell book have a similar drilling in the crossmember to my car. Is this a factory hole? What was it for?

I think the original fuel pipes from the l/h fuel tank run to the fuel pump on the rear subframe and then attached to the floor to come up in the engine bay between the body and the subframe by the "fixing (heater hoses?)" Looking at the 2nd image of the 997 it looks like the wire from the wiper motor goes through the bulkhead. Also in that image the metal pipe is connected to a rubber fuel pipe which connects to twin carbs.

Can't help with the extra hole, but here is my solution for the fuel line with twin carbs.
I think some of the early Mini's with twin carbs used this bracket.
Is a 62 850 shell.
