Re: Looking Better Than Ever
Q: Why Australia? Was there no one in the UK who could restore such an instrument?

Probably, but Roger is at the top of the tree when it comes to guages and you know it is right if it has been through his handsPeter Laidler wrote: ↑Fri Mar 10, 2023 5:51 pm Q: Why Australia? Was there no one in the UK who could restore such an instrument?

Rodger is one of a very few craftsmen when it comes to instruments. It started with his Father and has continued with Rodger. As we say here, he knows his s—t.

Thats because water frezees at 0° and boils at 100°
At least where these gauges where made

Strange that all(?) Speedwell gauges but the tachos was made by Autotemp in Sweden.

It is very pleasing when a rare item is refurbished to a standard that can demonstrate a craftman's skill and dedication.
However, don't assume that the ordinary jobs sent to such a business will pass through the craftsman's skilled hands; and don't assume all their employees strive to know the same 's--t' as their employer, or even reach a basic level of customer expectation.

Re: Looking Better Than Ever
A couple of years ago I sent a small collection of speedo bits to Roger. At that time his Dad was still coming in to work a couple of days each week, so he did it for me. It came back looking lovely. From memory the charge was a rather nice bottle of Tasmanian scotch.
I also had them repair the fuel sender unit from the Traveller tank. The internal mechanism was badly burnt, but Roger had a replacement part and it came back working perfectly and looking like a new one.

Re: Looking Better Than Ever
In my time we had craftsmen with those skills in England. Long time served ex sixties apprentice instrument makers were trained at Carlisle. The 'repair by replacement' era put a stop to that together with roll-sealed units. And, it has to be said, by the refusal of the manufacturers to sell spare parts. We later learned that certainly in the optical instrument side of things, they couldn't sell spare parts or lenses because the items were made abroad!

Could someone please change the topic title, as it implies you are talking about me.

Yes I am a nerd: I am researching the Austrian Mini-racing scene of the 60s and 70s
