Oil sump plug - non standard - identification needed

Post by gs.davies »

Many years ago following an oil change, the original sump plug was removed along with most of the threads. A local engine machine shop fitted this in it's place. I'd like to replace it with a Gold plug but I'm not sure what the thread it. It's tapered. Any ideas anyone?

Possibly a BSP tapered type fitted after the thread in the gearbox got mullered.

16.5 mm would match with 3/8" BSP - is it 19 tpi ?

I've seen that done, using a hex insert type VW Golf gearbox taper thread plug fitted. Told that such a mod can be carried out in-situ

Now you mention it, I do vaguely remember them talking about VW Golfs at the time. It was MANY years ago though and it WAS done in situ at Regal Engines Purfleet.

Can't remember the details off the top of my head but when the threads strip out, it is the ideal diameter for a bsp thread that taps straight in and can be done in situ (don't ask how I know). Pleaty of thread charts on line
