Years ago I found a ball bearing embedded in a piston crown of a newly built engine. I could never work out where it came from. Now I see this on another mini forum so perhaps this is the answer.

I believe they used the ball bearing dashpot on HIF carbs only

Yes, indeed. I heard of this happening to MGB GT V8's but the balls were just blown out of the exhaust - as I am lead to believe
