Speedo cable housing change date?

Post by Jason »

Anyone know when the speedo cable to pinion housing change from plastic to aluminium on the early mk1’s? The part that is bolted to the speedo housing that the cable screws onto.

From what I've been able to find, it was somewhere during 64, yet I haven't been able to find a more exact date.

Just found some information on this in Parnell's book. According to him...this was changed Sept 65...on 998 engine # 9FD SA H9899.
I thought it was earlier.

Timely conversation - was looking at my nylon one and wondering if I should replace it. Do they all fit the same though?

I found the nylon one works a bit like a nylock nut. It was nearly impossible for me to get the cable on and off by hand, I usually had to use pliers to get them to move.

The 1964 issue of AKD3502 already lists the alloy version, I don't think they would do that if not yet applicable. Perhapse a typo in John's book and that it ought to be September 64?

Thanks Toby, on the early boxes I have rebuilt I find that most of the plastic ones are cross threaded. They are identical in size/fit to the alloy ones. I have a couple of n.o.s plastic ones that I fit when people want originality kept. Interestingly, the plastic ones had no spring fork fitted, just the bolt with a flat and spring washer.

As most people had issues with correctly getting the cable screwed on to the splastic ones the threads usually got damaged, hence it was fairly common to see them be replaced by the alloy ones.
Jason, if you have a spare nos one then please let me know as I could do with it for my 63

I agree, I was always under the impression this change happened around the time of the A to B gear change.
The van/pickup AKD show it earlier than what Parnell says. It also shows the spring U shaped washer.....

I have no idea on the change point, but it was fairly early. I just as a matter of course chuck the nylon ones, which are usually knackered & replace them with the much more serviceable alloy ones.
