Hi.
I am going to retrofit a remote gear shifter in a 1966 (magic wand) Mk1.
Any advice to get before I make the hole for the gear shifter? Measure twice - cut once...
Does the hole have to be the same size as on a MkIII body?
Thank you.

What sort of remote shifter are you going to fit? Aftermarket? Rod change? TheseQ's need to be answered first

I have the shifter boot but is it necessary to make the hole in the floor the same size as the original remotes?
Thought it was unnecessarily large, don't want to remove more steel than necessary..

Ah, yes. See where you are coming from now and what sort of remote you are going to use. It's entirely up to you what size and shape your hole is - within reason. It is all dictated by how close you want the remote housing to be within the opening. Bear in mind that the remote housing will flex a bit and if it touches the floor at any point, it'll make a racket that'll spoil your day - and drive!
