Gearbox linkage problem

Post by sogatha »

Hi all.
I have a 1960 Mini that is a bit of a hybrid now - previous owners have fitted a 998 engine and a remote type gear linkage.

The gear lever has always been really sloppy but now suddenly I can't get reverse gear.

What might I be looking for when I take the remote housing off? Far as I can see replacement parts for this housing are pretty sparce.

Not too worried if the whole gearbox/engine has to come out but it would be nice to sort it without doing that as I know I'll end up rebuilding everything in sight...
thanks in advance.

It could be anything from poor adjustment to fair wear and tear. It could also be that something within the remote gear change system is jammed up. A typical cause is a nut fallen into the front end of the remote housing...... as was recently discussed here.

It's a fairly simple (?) job to drop the remote housing. If not there....., it's an engine out job I fear

A bit of a common-ish issue I found with these was the knuckle joints on top of the diff housing, the bolt(s) get loose, it still works for a while, but sloppy then as the splines wear, usually Reverse is the first to 'get lost'.

If I didn't have spare knuckles available, I'd put a tac weld on top of the shaft / joint. If they had to be removed at a later time, it was easy enough to grind the weld off. I'd take the carbs and manifolds off, join 2 welding rods together (to get the length to get down there) and zap away.

Just take additional precautions if you have a mechanical fuel pump. I'd leave the pump in place, just disconnect and plug up the fuel line to it.

There's a very old temporary fix for sloppy splines, much like the wiper splines. Wrap some tin foil around the splines and refit the knuckle joint; if you can access them from on top or underneath.

These two bits are always a good start.

They go in the bottom of the gear lever & take up all the slack at that end.

Hi all
OK so I took the remote linkage off and found this little metal olive/ball lying in the bottom of the housing.
I assume it slides over the stub on the diff housing (circled in red on pic) and fits between the forks of the control rod.

I can put it back on easily enough but if it's come off once it'll do it again.

What am I missing here?

Looks like the hardened steel ball has come detected from the remote change shaft that passes up through the diff housing, the part number for reference is 22A253. The knuckle fits on the top of the shaft at the top.

Forgot to mention that this should be one piece, a replacement shaft will sort the problem.

Thanks Jason - I can see how it all works now…

Next question is - if I can get hold of a new shaft, can it be fitted in situ or does the whole engine have to come out?

I might try and weld the ball back on first as there’s nothing to lose

If you remove the knuckle joint from the top of the shaft, it will then slide out from the bottom of the diff housing. It should slide past the crank lever,. Some tacks of weld at the top of the ball would work provided the ball end is a good fit to the stub on the shaft end.

Hi, during my recent rebuild of a remote housing assembly, I found that the gear lever bush(22G389) at the lever base had different diameter in size, about 0.7m in difference, both are NOS parts, and the height of bush are different too, though they looked the same in appearance, anybody has the same experience? if using the bigger one, I have to force the bush into the knuckle but excessive movement of the gear lever will dislodged the bush out of the gear lever, is the bush fitting there just to stop the lever rattle? Or its' purpose is to take up the slack feeling of gear change?
Thanks for any advice.
