With some guidance from forum members I've now sourced a set of the correct main bearings for my 850 rebuild. Having installed the crankshaft I've measured the end float at 0.005". The workshop manual says it should be 0.002" to 0.003" so I started looking for a set of +0.003" thrust washers. There doesn't seem to be a shortage of standard sized washers but I can't find a set of the +0.003 ones. Then tonight I read on the Mini Forum someone saying that 0.005" end float was o.k.
That's raised a few questions for me:
1. Is 0.005" acceptable.
2. Is it likely that a set of new standard thrusts would reduce the end float (the 0.005" is with the old thrusts)?
3. Does anyone know a source for the +0.003" thrust washers for an 850?
Thanks in advance,
Phillip

Re: Crankshaft End Float
Phillip,
If you cannot find .003" washers....here is a set of .010'...you could surface grind them to get the right end float....
Probably get away with just doing one side.
Cheers

Re: Crankshaft End Float
You do really need to start with new, standard size thrusts, measure up and go from there.

Thanks Guys,
I've ordered a new set of standard size. Graeme, you're right. Until I've done that I've no datum.
Regards,
Phillip

Re: Crankshaft End Float
When I refitted my un-ground crankshaft with new standard size thrust bearing into the same engine block it had literally zero axial play. Had to have it ground back by .002" to get the correct end float.
Yes I am a nerd: I am researching the Austrian Mini-racing scene of the 60s and 70s

Re: Crankshaft End Float
850,s are particularly prone to thrust issues as the are so small . Crank could be ok on journals but knackered on thrust faces
