Main Bearings for early 850

Post by Mr Rusty850 »

Having got Christmas and New Year out of the way I decided to start the engine rebuild of my 850 engine this morning and immediately hit a problem. The engine bearings I bought are for a later 850 with narrower journals. The crank I'm using is from a 1965 engine and it's only when I've delved deeper into the info on the Minispares site that I've found that pre 69 850's had a 1.185" crank journal compared with 1.064" journals on the 69 to 85 engines. My problem is that the early, wider bearings are shown as NLA. Does anyone know where I might be able to get hold of a set of standard sized bearings for the 1.185" wide journals?

Many thanks,
Phillip

Try https://www.fwthornton.co.uk/ Very helpful company with great stock of old and obsolete bearings etc.

You can use the narrower 998 / 1098 bearings with no problems

Think I bought mine from Somerfords. They seem to be better for mk1 parts than others.

They are also common to the 948 Morris Minor Block.

Brilliant. Thank you for all the replies. Somerford have them in stock and I've ordered a set.

There is another thread on the site about people leaving the forum because of comments made. I'm also a member of the TR and Lancia forums. Whilst they are a very civilised bunch on the Lancia Forum some of the members of the TR are less than welcoming. By contrast I find the Mk1 Forum to be much friendlier and the level of knowledge that members have and are prepared to share is superb. It's a hugely valuable resource for people like me who haven't worked on minis for over 40 years.
