engine cutout in Autotests

Post by agricola »

I have a recurring problem with the engine cutting out on my S in vigours movements in autotests, handbrake turns etc. I have cleaned tanks out (they were clean anyway replaced lines and fuel pumps and filters (large filter king) changed float chamber valves to vitron tipped ones. Even run it with both fuel pumps, still cuts out. Fuel pressure is at a constant 3 psi. Any thoughts? Using super unleaded.

Something moving and affecting an electrical connection. Broken core in a cable ?

A ‘hard’ cut would (to me) indicate electrical/ignition, whereas a cough & splutter and unwillingness to rev first would indicate fuel.

Try yet another coil. I had the same trouble but just on l/h turns! Change of coil worked.

Are you using the clutch? Too low an idle speed and it’s stalling as wheel speed becomes very low?

no its done it on both engines with rpm relatively high I am going to flow check the fuel in case the hard fuel line has gunge in it. I cut open the fuel tanks and they were spotless. Coil is new but is mounted up in the bonnet mounted on a head stud.

Is it always turning a particular way or does it happen all the time?

Which way are the float bowl lids rotated? If the float is set sideways it might be shutting off during turns

Sounds as if the only remaining parts are the fuel line and ignition switch ?

Maybe bit of rubber from a hose flapping around inside fuel pipe or something shorting out ignition switch...bit tenuous I know :)

EDIT, another thought, it not the wrong angle inlet manifold is it ?

I will look at that all the ignition switch wiring to coil etc was changed and thinking about it it is worse anticlockwise left hand turns

I put my problem down to lack of oil in the coil. Pointed it downwards as a temporary fix.

Check all your engine mounts & the main battery cable. I have seen this it was caused by the man battery cable shorting out on the exhaust.
