Momo Steering Wheel Boss....& Mini horn push

Post by Exminiman »

Think the answer to this is "No" but thought would ask anyway......

I fancy a 14" Momo Prototipo steering wheel, question is is it possible to have a Boss that will accommodate standard Mini Mk1 1 horn push ?

If it is possible to make it work, can anyone suggest a boss ?

Ta in advance

Something like this, hole in middle looks bit small...:

I’ve got one in the Corvette.

Outside of horn push 59mm
Inside of mounting insert 51.5mm
Inside of wheel hole 54.5mm

I got mine off Amazon believe it or not, it had a damaged box and was almost 1/2 price.

I had that exact wheel fitted to my old '91 mini. The centre is way too small to accommodate the standard Mk1 horn push, so there won't be any boss kit available that'll allow this wheel to be fitted with one. Your best option would probably be to look into a custom/aftermarket horn push to replace the standard MOMO button, if making it look "older" is important to you.

No it's not possible to have a Boss that will accommodate standard Mini Mk1 1 horn push.
The Momo boss is far to small for the bakalite hornpush to fit in. Maybe the hornpush from
the Morris Minor or the Austin type will fit ore can be made to fit.

Why don't you make an adaptor like on the LL Wheels?

One potential problem with using something off the shelf like an LL trim ring is you need the stack height of the boss and trim ring to be identical to the stock setup or the spring won’t contact the horn button.

I’ve been messing around trying to 3D print a Mk1 horn trim ring for a Maxrob steering wheel and with a bit of work and some measurements you could come up with an adapter to your specific momo hub.

Or you can try to find an hornpush like one of these.

This post has reminded me so dug out my Prototipo that was on my Mk3 S.. lovely wheel which i would like on my Mk1 .. the center on this Momo wheel is 55mm id .. on a Lathe it is possible to turn up something out of tooling block ( insulating material ) that would take the standard Austin Horn Push & its behind components .. biggest issue would be how to get this new adaptor with BMC Hornpush then earth secured onto the Momo Wheel correctly spaced to contact the steering colum center .. hmm 8-)

Our Aussie Timmy is a dab hand at all things make-and-mend Norman. He'd have an adaptor formulated in his head, made on his lathe and working in an hour or so.

Hi Exminiman, my solution is just like Indigo and others have suggested - the standard ADO 16 (Morris 1100) horn switch is almost identical in form and fit to the standard MOMO horn push. I have two MOMO bosses and steering wheels fitted to my Minis with the Morris 1100 centres. If you require the horn to work as original you need to do some shortening of the insulator and wiring assembly to suit. I made up a new insulator from a bar of delrin which worked well once I figured out the required dimensions.
Cheers, Maddog

Cheers for the info folks, much appreciated.

Despite my earlier comment  seems there is a few options for a horn push even an Austin van one seems to work.

Its going on my Hill climber, but still want it to look right - in my eyes only.

Not sure if its a “Bun steer” but i also read that the early Motor Lita wheels had smaller horn push size, so maybe there a re few more around than you might expect ?

I had the same situation where I wanted to run the mk1 horn push in my racecar so I drew up an adapter in autocad and printed it. I’m sure I still have the file and I would be happy to send it to you if you want to print one for yourself?

Cheers

Yep, 55mm center in the steering wheel. I’m actually running a Momo Prototipo myself. The horn doesn’t function. But it looks good and it’s a racecar. I did use a couple of foam earplugs behind the horn push to keep it snug and not rattling.
