Mini Spares Laygear 22G1100

Post by Kiwi Craig »

Can any of you tell me of the quality of the Mini Spares 22G1100 Cooper S laygear.
They seem to be made in Italy, but would like some endorsements from any of you that have fitted one to your S.
Just to be used in a road car, not trashed or raced.
Dont want to ship to New Zealand then find out they are rubbish.

Teeth on first gear are longer than on original BMC gear which causes issues in a mini box .

Its was originally produced for 1275 midget gearbox

I had one in 333 box and first gear had a whine like Jones’s butchers van in Dads Army and the gearstick vibrated , drop into second different world , fitted a second hand BMC one , perfect in all gears.

You will get different opinions on this that’s for sure . I’ve used quite a few and had no problems at all . First gear will be noisy as it’s straight cut . … Ken

I used one in my 333 rebuild. It’s a little bit noisy but I just assumed all straight cut years are like that. Anyway it’s a 3-synchro box so don’t spend much time in 1st :)

It has a tendency to ‘wind out’ if you try dumping the clutch with a lot of revs on, but that might just be a worn selector fork… other than that I’ve had no problems with it.

Think I read an article by Vizard years ago, maybe in CCC, about "topping" the straight cut gears (first or SC box) to make them quieter and presumably stop them bottoming out ? This may have some relevance on this application as well...
