Baulk Rings

Post by Oneball »

I know this is an often discussed topic but any thoughts on this:

Winter gearbox rebuild, it’s a Special Tuning SCCR box so has been used and abused for many years of racing. I often have to replace baulk rings due to wear or occasionally breakage but got it apart today and they’re all in pieces which is something I’ve never had happen before.

That is quite impressive. I've seen one but never all broken.

Do you recall the source of those baulk rings?

Sintered steel rings will not stand much punishment, you would be better off using a good used set of pressed steel rings that were manufactured back in the 60s. If you are buying new replacements make sure they are at least the competition ones conc machined from clean steel and correctly hardened around the lugs.

If they are Minispares competition rings from a few years ago, I had a similar experience. They are not sintered but still weak.
The first image compares the Minispares ring with one from Quaife. The oil grooves are deeper and therefore create a weakness. The sharp edges also can’t be helping
I understand Minispares have now improved the design.

I think they were the competition ones.

The new ones from Guess have much shallower channels.

Racing at Brands Hatch yesterday and the gear change is the best I remember it ever being. So a thumbs up for the Guess Works baulk rings, will have to see what they’re like for longevity.

Hello,
because the heading is 'baulk rings' I will put my question here.

In my parts collection I found these two types of rings. Both were sold to me als heavy duty respectively competition rings. But what's about these two differents kinds? Brass is certainly weaker than steel. So why are there different materials on the market?

Bronze rings are for use with non-original gear sets that do not have molybdenum coating on the cone faces.

Using manganese-bronze avoids problems with steel on steel galling that could otherwise friction weld the ring onto the cones.
