Mk1 Wiper set up

Post by Rubbersoul »

The wipers on my car are useless. They 'work' but don't really do much and at any speed they barely clear the screen. The wipers are new. The motor operates well (single speed DR3A) How the Mini rally drivers coped amazes me.
What possible upgrades are there that could improve matters?
Thanks

It depends on what the issue you are having is. Are the blades not actually clearing the screen, ie. are they not in contact through the full sweep ? or are they just not clearing quickly enough ?. If there is insufficient contact a slight bend in the arm to increase pressure is usually enough to give full clearance across the sweep. If the motor is fine there's no reason for them not to be adequate.

Maybe the springs in the arms, between the socket part and the actual arm are finished.

Splosh on some Rainex & be happy as this situation is normal.. probably why classic cars do not go out in the Rain that often ;)

The works cars had fairly highly modified wiper kit. A Works guru will be able to give far more detail than I can.

I use the latest make of mk1 wiper blades from minispares and they are loads better than those of a few years back that were just too hard. Cant say they didnt cope in the monsoon conditions when i took the 1071 for its MOT.

The cables, spindle boxes and motor gearbox tend to get gummed up with dried grease after a few decades :)..

Probably worth a strip down, clean out and regrease if the wipers are getting a bit sluggish....

Not too onerous a task.
