Changing diff ratio (in frame)

Post by Terence »

I’ve got it in my head that I want to go to a slightly taller diff ratio, I have a 3.44 at the moment and would like to go to 3.2 or 3.1.
Is it possible to do this without pulling the motor?
I can’t really see being able to change the pinion, but maybe there is a way?

You could install bigger diameter front wheels and tires.

I reckon it’d be quicker and 95% easier to take out the engine

Seeing as you’d need to remove the diff & engine mount on the LH side there’d be very little holding in the engine, which might also make it unstable for removing the pinion gear

I'd thought about this too Tim. You'd need to keep the box and blocks supported on the jack or suspended. Thinking on my feet, as I do occasionally, if you were doing it in-situ, you'd need to be able to lift and lower slightly to get a bit of movement - and a bit more occasional clearance as the diff is being removed

Hi Peter,
You wont be able to change the final drive to a 3.1 as the pinion is too big to fit inside the c-clamp. Also there is no way you can take the remote part out without removing the studa. Took engine out and did it that way in the end

Got that Ronaldino. I was just thinking about the technicalities of taking one out and putting a similar one back with engine basically in-situ. Like you, I'm an engine out and in man. Plus you can do a few more jobs while it's out

Yes, I thought about it a bit more and came to the same conclusion.
Thanks to all that answers, that brought me to my sense’s.
