Not a bad idea Peter to be honest, however I just want to sort out the puzzle with the water pump belt misalignment first

He advised that it would not be possible to have the spacer on the water pump side at the back of the pulley as you would not have enough room left to fit the pulley onto the water pump spigot, - would this be correct?
There is ample room to fit spacer on wrong side of pulley. Injection cars have a large diameter pulley so spacer fits inside easily. This would not be the case however on an earlier car with smaller diameter pulley, so your mechanic would be partially right in that instance.

Anyhow, your previous picture clearly shows what the issue is.............spacer fitted between water pump and pulley. Be interesting to see how mechanic trys to B.S's out of this one.

Great, thanks so much for the detailed information - yes it will be interesting

Pulley fit onto the water pump shaft - I also mentioned that when I was looking at the pulley again, it doesn't seem straight to me so I put a rule across the pulley with a level and it shows that the pulley is not straight. When you fit the pulley onto the water spigot before you fit the spacer and the radiator fan, is this normally a tight fit or a loose fit?
