Alternator fitting - crossmember cut Q?

Post by AndyPen »

I've been looking at a a lot of works cars for reference, but I am pretty sure we didn't cut our front crossmember back to accommodate the AC11 alternator. Later cars didn't have it cut either, but did alternators get smaller perhaps?

It's a 64 1071 that was upgraded when modified for rally use in the late 60s / into the 70s. There is a new front panel on it now, so just wanted to check before the engine goes in.

Thoughts very welcome folks ;-)

My 11 AC alternator originally fitted to my cop car - replaced with an ACR- was pretty much the same size with regards to the overall dimensions to the AC. And definitely didn't have a clearance cut in the crossmember. So physically, I can't see why. UNLESS a recess was cut in your cossmember to allow for extra clearance in case of a shunt, to protect the (then) expensive alternator. The mounting brackets were always pretty fragile.

Me also doing research & noticed the cut out in the top of the front panel on some works cars .. perhaps allowing clearance for quick replacing the Alternator without the need to fanny about with clearing the vertical oil cooler or other fouling issues in that area .. others will know the true answer.?

Perhaps another answer is those without cut out panel are not original works car shells :o

Lol, naughty naughty ;-) I think is was probably a 'speed the job up' modification as opposed to a necessity. Going through old photos to see if I have any clues ;-)

I also had a look through my books. I found 3 photos of cars with 3 different configurations.
The earliest I found was 1966 ...GRX 5D with 2xH4's, then split Webbers and cross flow with FI. All showed the modification to the slam panels.
Something I'd not noticed until Andy mentioned it.

Been through all the old photos I have of the car and apart from a very indistinct one where the panel was damaged, nothing looks remotely like it was cut out. So sticking with my recollection but asked previous owners - just in case.

I copied the Works idea and chopped a bit out of the front panel when I built my car with the 11AC system. I'm sure I would have clearance issues otherwise.

Any idea where to buy that U bend heater hose attached to the control valve?

Yes the pop rivets are there to re-attach the diagonal stiffener.
