Screw-in filter head

Post by Peter Laidler »

After 30 years of oily-arm oil changes, I am just about to take the plunge and replace the cartridge oil filter on my '69 S with a screw-in filter and head. Don't fret......, I'll clean the cartridge bits down and leave them safe and sound, plus a new filter, for the next owner or if demanded by the concourse police at Beaulieu next year.......

Presently, the ADAPTOR, OIL COOLER HOSE TO FILTER HOUSING AHA 6423 is a tapered thread into the taper threaded filter housing. So far, so good - and leakproof.

The new screw-on filter housing however has a STANDARD, PARALLEL THREAD. And while the taper thread of AHA 6423 will start (same TPI's) in the parallel threaded screw-on housing, it ain't correct.

Is there a forumer who can give me the part number of or identify a screw-in filter housing that has a taper thread that will accept the taper threaded AHA 6423 Adaptor.
Or do I 1) bite the bullet and have the thread re-cut to taper spec?
Or do I 2) bite the bullet and live with oily-arm oil changes?

I actually did this mod to my S in the mid 70's and don't remember this taper/parallel situation arising then

Think you might have a later filter head Peter, the pre 91 MS has a taper thread.

12A2032 HEAD ASSEMBLY, oil filter 1973-88.
TAM2097 HEAD ASSEMBLY, oil filter 1988-92; will replace 12A2032

According to Somerford you also need to change the studs (part no. CHS2613) that screw into the engine block.

Good Sirs, between you, you have unravelled the mystery in a few choice words! I'd trawled through the S/ford on-line catalogue but the variables were mind numbing. Alas it was a combination of MS and S/Ford that got me there - and many thanks for your directions

The thought of having to machine a straight threaded oil cooler hose adaptor was going to tax me a bit!!!!! But now it's all fallen into place.

The new - shorter - mounting bolts were also puzzling but easy to cure with the full picture in my head.

What also puzzled me a bit was that I had also done the same mod to a 998 Cooper MSM 130F that I used as a work-a-day runabout car. No oil cooler there, just an unbolt the old and bolt on the new screw-in housing

Thanks again

The late injection Coopers with that filter head used a rubber olive and gland nut on both ends ,most specialist do an aeroquip hose to replace the steel tube .

Hold on for a few weeks Tex and the others who have PM'd me over the weekend. The modification seems to have puzzled some others too - but not now, after the brilliant responses.

I will write the whole lot up as a technical article with pictures immediately after I've done mine. The days of oily arm oil changes are over!!!!!

I got an older type screw on filter that kept the same longer studs. I know you could get them with Purolator embossed on them,

Seems the easiest option and looks original.

Dad put one of these on his 1275 MG Midget .. cos if you think changing an element filter is bad on a Mini .. try an MG Midget
