61 countryman rear shocks

Why are the rear shocks so expensive and are the needed on my car?

Yes... rear shocks are a good idea. A. Your handling will be a bit iffy without them and B. If you encounter a big enough bump, the shock stops the rear suspension going to full droop thereby preventing the rear suspension from possibly falling apart.

Genuine 1961 Traveller shocks may be expensive. However, if you’re not an anorak, I’ve been running shocks I took off my 63 S at the back of my 65 Traveller for years without any issues....

Thanks Ian, I was not thinking of no shocks. I was wondering why they are different{longer} than the salons.

It should have longer trumpets than the saloon and also a bigger flange, all in common with the Vans, Mini Mokes, Mokes and the late Rover Minis.

These give it a bit of a harder spring rate than the saloon for added weight carrying capacity.

Maybe they did originally have longer shocks but the ones off a saloon bolt right in. I’ve never had any issues, even with several 20KG bags of horse food in the back.

Can’t comment on the longer trumpets because I use HiLos but I’m pretty sure I fitted cones from a late model (70s :) Clubman saloon....

As far as I can see, Travellers used the same subframes as saloons. The extra length is in front of the heel board and behind the rear subby crossmember.

I use hi-los in the rear (& front) which addresses the original longer rear steel trumpets in my '61 Countryman build.

And I now use GAZ adjustable dampers in both rear & front. Very light setting (5) if unloaded, 10 if loaded.

When I was in Australia and the Van's front suspension was shot, I used Koni Sport adj dampers. Big disadvantage was need to remove them to adjust setting. Never explored a Koni possibility for the rear...which had standard sedan rear aluminum trumpets when I got it.
