DM2 or replace?
I have a worn DM2 dizzy on an early 850 running positive earth.
I’m about to replace the engine with an 1100 and need to do something with the distributor.
I’d like to fit an electronic version so I’m looking for suggestions?

Re: DM2 or replace?
Can't you just leave the original 1100 type distributor in it? It'll be sort-of matched as-is. If it's not, just refurbish it to suit. Or do the same with your original I'd say. The trouble with electronic conversions is that they don't give out a warning......., they just stop! As I found out when my Commando got as far as Leeds. Luckily I had the old mechanical points on the bike so was able to swop them.

I agree with the above. If the 1100 has a distributor, get the transplant running with what you have (including points). Once you are satisfied all is running well you can install an Ignitor type conversion to the existing distributor.

Re: DM2 or replace?
Be sure what ever is fitted has the right curve. If it's a High Compression engine (>9:1) on 1100 engines, this is very important.

Re: DM2 or replace?
Perhaps a CSI unit Graham? I bought one for the S. Not fitted it yet though. I did elect to fit the original after engine rebuild and during running in so at least if I had a problem i would know the distributor setup was as before. That said, before the CSI, all the other Minis have had the Ignitor setup....

Hi Paul.
The CSI would be a good call. Also fancy the one with the built in immobiliser.
The 1098 build hasn’t got going yet as I’ve been let down repeatedly by ‘our local engine builder’ (DB - you know who I mean).
Might just freshen up the 850 with a new carb and dizzy for this year and sort the engine out over winter.
Will have to source an alternative builder I think.

Re: DM2 or replace?
I feel your pain. Though it has been well over a decade, I took my Mini engine to a local builder who works primarily on race cars. He told me up front that his race car customers came first and that I should expect a slow build. I did not realize that all he would get done in 5 months was to measure the crank and bores and have OTHERS crack check the components. I finally gave in, paid him a lot for what he had done, and took my engine (in pieces) to another shop. The first guy has a good reputation among racers but I was disappointed... especially when he managed to lose some of my engine parts during the 5 months.Minigman wrote: Will have to source an alternative builder I think.

Not naming any names but I’ve now booked my engine build with a reputable company in Plymouth.

Probably a good plan Graham. Let me know the outcome....Minigman wrote:Not naming any names but I’ve now booked my engine build with a reputable company in Plymouth.

Paul
Having waited for DB since last June, I’m taking the engine to Paul Inch on Monday. He’s just finished this seasons race engines so the timing has worked out well. He’s doing the lot including gearbox and diff etc.
Will keep you posted.

Assumed it to be Paul Inch. I would be interested how your gearbox turns out. I want to get a spare built for the MK 3 S. Be nice to keep it local.Minigman wrote:Paul
