Water temp capillary pipe routing?

Post by 65MK1S »

Anybody have a pic of the correct routing of the mechanical water
temp capillary pipe? If I remember correctly it goes along the radiator
shroud?

Was there ever a correct route for the mechanical pipe? I always just assumed that the temp gauge was electrically operated.

My 65 S came with the mechanical capillary tube style temp gauge. I really prefer
the electrical type but it is what it is :)

The dual gauge types was fairly common around these parts......, being fitted to locally made MG's. It could well be that the odd dual gauge was, er......, liberated from the MG works. Accidentally of course!

I'll need time to find a pic but yes, the typical (as this was an accessory) route is out of the rotodip hole (Though do recall one example in a specially drilled hole with a huge grommet - weber box version I think), fed high above the water bottle and wiper motor, then down onto the radiator shroud. A few 'pigtail' spiral coils of the wire... then connected to the sender position.

Just found this online - which looks pretty much like how we did it back in the day ;-)

Also of course, its an easy take back out this way ;-)

Agree with Andys photo .. my late brothers Works Replica has the Temp; Gauge Capillary pipe route that .. runs forward from cyl;head then up to secure on the top rad cowl bolt where it has a clip .. then runs under the inner wing lip with a pipe bracket onto the angle steel @ bulkhead to inner wing then runs up above wiper motor hidden along under scuttle to route then through the bulkhead Speedo Hole onto the Temp Gauge..

To the other question i call it the Hedgehog Heater Tap as fitted to my 1071.. others will know the specifics .. i think the upstand part of this heater control valve is possible a specific angle for the Mk1 Mini .. today a nos spare is rare as hens teeth something that i would buy ;)

As I recall Norman, the 'hedgehog' valve as shown here uses the same diaphragm as the various other hedgehog, tilted/leaning valves used on different cars. EASY to strip down to replace a leaky valve

Not sure I would feel comfortable with the coil of capillary tubing hanging loose over the Alternator and fan belt...surely need securing in some way?

It’s more rigid than it would appear, and I think that was what the works did. We never had any problems despite some massive yumps and plenty of gravel stages.

As Peter says, yes the tops of the heater valve can be swapped by removing a single rivet. You can then twist the old top off. Nick had a pic of one dismantled here somewhere??

Thanks for the info. I have seen several listed in ebay, but the angle looks different and the "exit" of the tubing appears to point in the wrong direction.

That's the MGB one, the Mini ones are MUCH harder to find.
