Help needed with head ID.

Post by Tim »

I recently bought a 1962 850 power unit to replace the one missing from my Traveller. The casting numbers on the engine and gearbox look right but the head seems a bit odd. It doesn't seem to match the engine, it appears to have been painted with red oxide, and it is showing damage where the rocker pedestals attach and the valve stems are fairly worn. The rest of the power unit is BMC green and shows very little sign of wear. The head doesn't have a normal casting number. The two most obvious numbers are shown below, there's a also a third number which looks a bit like a date but doesn't seem to make sense.

It looks like a standard 850 head in all other respects. Can anyone identify it, and what was Britmo?

thanks
Tim
