Stopping power - pads. AGAIN

I really loved the metal ceramic pads I had on my Mk3. Until now. The car had been parked up a wee while and was determined to stay that way. These pads certainly stop a car. In fact over time they render it immovable!

No these are not some artefact from an Iron Age burial site but the remains of dead pads.

It is clear that contamination with winter salt has not been in the best interests of braking. This despite washing everything down before parking up. Living by the North Sea won’t have helped either.

I am thus open to suggestions for a set of pads that will (a) stop a very quick mini well and (b) not confuse archaeologists in a couple of years time.

Incredible. It seems like the pad material is absorbent. Or has the pad delaminated from the steel backer. Most strange. What was the disc like?

Gawd I can see what you mean. They look like they’ve been in a blast furnace.
Great pads but not ideal when the cost is so bloody high. Off to check mine now

I've had this too, it's the first I've heard of someone else having the same.
But yes it had been suggested to me that somehow they absorbed moisture and then delaminated.

These came from Minispares several years back. I’m sure used on the track and away from any salt and washed off and dried off after each outing they are perhaps fine. Maybe not the ideal road pad for our climate. In fairness they are not advertised as a road pad.

Reminds me of the time i started rallying. On the way to a stage,plod pulled me over cos my brake lights were flashing. I was running DS11's which had more metal in them than the discs!!! and left foot braking. Let me go cos the plod bike outriders had to do the same!

Back in the 80s I visited Bob Tulius at Group 44 when he was the main player for Jaguar in Group C/Lemons ..

When the old carbon discs became too worn for use they just cut them up and made new pads.... No need to throw money away..

I’ve found mintex standard road pads to be excellent on the road (both on cooper s brakes and 4 pot kad brakes). They bite well and you would have to be really pushing it to make them fade. I swap to carbon metallic pads for the track only.

I use Mintex M1144 pads and am quite happy with them. Actually marked as "competition only pads. not for road use.", however for my liking they fare in road use quite well. (Not an endorsement, only my personal opinion!)
They have their downsides (lots of brake dust & tend to be more squeaky than standard pads), but they have quite a nice "bite" and improved braking over the formerly used standard pads massively. So far I had some decelerations from high speeds with them on the autobahn and was quite happy to not have had fitted standard pads!

Can anyone recommend decent pads for 7" discs?
I know the 7" discs are not known for great performance but i'm not sure if its just the heat generated or my ebc pads that are not helping.

M1144 work well on the Cooper discs. The correct bedding process is critical though, if not done properly they will never perform properly. I used to use the local industrial estate, Three emergency stops from,30,40,50,60 and 70 mph with time to cool in-between, so 15 stopes, it takes time, not touching the pedal while they cool. This ensures they go through the correct heat cycles. After that they should be capable of locking the front wheels on 145 tyres....

Just an update....
Fitted the Mintex pads to my 7" discs and they are awesome!
Night and day difference over the EBC pads. Full test at Castle Combe proved these 7" discs to be very good.
