Help with an engine number

Post by steve »

Hi,
I have got an old engine in the garage that I am going to soon rebuild and put into my Clubman. I have been trying to decode the engine number to work out what the engine was removed from. The engine tag says 12H353E-H39520.
From this I know it's a 1275cc engine, but what does 353E relate to? And does the suffix mean anything? Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers,
Stephen

I can't find any info regarding the 353 part of the engine number, but the E after the numbers usually denotes that the engine is a reconditioned service unit.
The numbers 379, 380, 389, 390 and 706 are all from the 1275GT range of engines.
Does / did the engine have a mechanical fuel pump.?

353: dynamo, negative ground, standard ratio 4-synchro gearbox with remote shift, mechanical fuel pump.

E: nothing to do with reconditioned. Means carb crankcase ventilation.
