22g1128 gearbox question

Post by ateichert »

I rebuilt my 22g1128 gearbox as part of engine overhaul 4/5 months ago and am now second guessing myself. Unit is still on stand. Today someone showed me a failed gearbox because they had left out the retaining ring (inner) for the idler bearing in the trans case and the bearing walked out into the transmission. They said there are suppose to be a retainer ring on both sides of the bearing. I know I installed the inner one but I don't remember a grove for one on the outside. I did not have any extra parts left over. Question is do they all have a two retaining ring or do I get to take off the cover?
Thanks Mike

All the 1128 boxes I have done (a few) have the retaining ring (circlip) on both sides of the bearing.

As long as you have a circlip on the inner end of the bearing in the gearbox, the others are not important for preventing the bearing from doing any damage, they can't go anywhere. The late Gearboxes have no retainers whatsoever on the gear side of these bearings.

I have done loads of these boxes over the years. Please, please make sure the bearing is secured properly with a circlip on both sides.
