Seat cover

Post by nickacb »

Hello, It may seem a little too of a picky quiestion but I've been driving my mini a lot these days and here in Mexico City the weather is very hot. The thing is the car has the original vinyl fleck seat covers and they just make my back sweat like a pig. Is there any good seat covers you would normally use tu put in top of the orginal ones or something? thanx

Those were de rigueur in all Nissan Bluebird Minicabs.

Seat covers for Mk1 Minis are a bit of a challenge, short of having some custom made, the universal one-size-fits-all option are all too big. That said, its very easy to cut down the big ones. What I've done in the past is get a pair of cheap two piece covers (with the base and back covered seperately). Around here they tend to be a cheap tweed-like fabric on the faces, with the back or skirt made of some sort of stretchy fabric. This makes the quite forgiving when it comes to fit them.

Turn them inside out and fit them over the seat back or base. They will be too big, so smooth them down and leave the edges sticking out. Go round the edges with sewing pins, and pin the two pieces of fabric (the tweed and the stretchy stuff) together so that they meet where you want the finished seam. Take them off then, using your Mum's sewing machione, sew around the seam inside the line marked by the pins. Cut off the excess fabric, turn them the right way round and fit them. If they are still too loose, run another seam inside the first one to make them a bit smaller. When you fit the bases you can remove the clips that hold to factory vinyl seat covers to the metal frame then fit them over the new covers to keep them really tight and stop them sliding around. The backs normally have ties that feed through at the bottom.

Great suggestions, thanx. I'm currently thinking about buying some cushions in wish or maybe I'm gonna look for some tweed or plaid old school covers

thanx

If you dig into Mark's excellent catalog of historical documents you'll find BMC's 1965 range of seat covers.

Taking inspriation from the brochure, I was delighted to find that both tartan and leopard print universal seat covers are available on ebay, and would make a great starting point to cut down to Mini size.
