I've read that Mk1 Cooper 998 had 22G68 casings with 22G232 laygear.
On my 1967 Cooper built on the 31st of May, I have a 22G382 casing (22G231 laygear). These gearboxes seem to have been used on Elf / Hornet.
I've also read that the first Mk2 Cooper (3 synchro ones) had 22G231 laygear too. (22A1288 casing)
Has the original gearbox been replaced on my Mini or could it be the original one? Keep in mind my car is a late Mk1.

Re: Cooper gearbox casing number / laygear
My ‘67 cooper 998 was built august 4th 1967 and has a 22G382 casing. The car had been a museum piece for awhile so I was lead to believe it was all original but when pulling the engine I discovered the “wrong” casing number. Maybe it’s not wrong after all.

Re: Cooper gearbox casing number / laygear
If you go into the technical section, somewhere on the forum, you will find a 4 page breakdown of all (?) the gearboxes used PLUS the variables. It's an encyclopedia for gearbox builders.
If I was clever with compu'in stuff I would be more helpful as to how to get to it - it seems to be off the beaten track a bit, but there you go!
Written by Bart Theelan and our own Nick Rogers, your question will be fully answered PLUS more.
Can someone do one of those direct link thinggies.......
Looking at these figures/number combinations again, I guess that we're lucky to have these number crunching maestros in our number. Well done Bart and Nick......

Re: Cooper gearbox casing number / laygear
I’ve had my hands on at least 5 Cooper gearboxes ( from early 997/998 with A type gears to Mk2 22A1288 and all had close ratio gearsets , if eventually they got at some point a normal ratio ( 22g231 ) gearset i am not sure .

Re: Cooper gearbox casing number / laygear
I guess my question is the mk1 performance link missing the casing number for some 998 coopers? Two members here with matching casing numbers on what are believed to be original 998 coopers?

Re: Cooper gearbox casing number / laygear
Update...
I thought my gearbox had 22G231 laygear as it should be with a 22G382 casing. In fact it has a 22G1100 laygear which is the later reference for the 22G232 laygear. It's all correct then!
It seems that not all Cooper have 22G68 casing.
