Sorry, BMW MINI content, Camshafts

Post by mk1coopers »

Hi All, a friend of mini has has the timing chain snap on her BMW MINI, (2010 R56 Turbo Cooper S) the head was saveable, however, the both the inlet and exhaust cams are right at the edge of their tolerances as they have twisted, so the question is who are people getting cams from, they are £££ from BMW, there must be a aftermarket supplier ?

There must be plenty of used stock available at the dismantlers. There are plenty of BMW/MINI specialist breakers up and down the country.

Here's just a couple of them

Thanks for the links, I'll pass those along, we were trying to stay away from used but it might be the only option

Is it the shafts that are twisted?

The reason I ask is that the cams are fitted with adjusters which can be purchased as a separate part

The machine shop that did the rest of the head say they are, I guess they took a hit when the valves kissed the pistons (it popped 2 rockers out of their holders) it’s a nice spec 60 plate S so it’s worth doing (to the owner) over 1K for a pair of new cams seems excessive though

Have you Googled "MINI Cooper S R56 Camshafts"?

Lots of hits for new in the £650-$700 range.

Worth trying 1320 for good MINI advice, they may have good standard camshafts removed from low mileage customer cars who have upgraded:-

and also Lohen are very good:-

There's also a couple of forums where he can ask.

Total Mini and Mini 2, they both cater to these cars.

The local BMW mini specialist here in The Hague sells uprated cams from Catcams which offer about 17 bhp more from 3k onwards if mapped right, for about 825 euros (about 700 sterling). So I guess stock ones shouldn't be 1000...

Of course I know what a dipstick is, you get called something often enough you look it up!
