tyres

Post by nickacb »

Justo wondering if trailer tyres are suitable for a safety use in a mini such like these?:

With my limited German, my reading is that they're not limited to trailers and are R speed rated to boot. I can';t see any load rating - but there might be one. Interesting. Maybe a good deal for a little 850 mini.

What/how do the German speakers interpret this?

Ok I actually have a 850 1960 mini but since I live in Mexico I just cannot find tyres this small I have to import them and of course the end price is practically double considering shipping and taxes

There are quite a few Mini clubs in Mexico, (see MiniWorld list below) I would be surprised if none of them have a good source of 10" Mini tyres?
(Alejandro below of 'Mini Asociados Mexico' is very helpful and visted us here in the UK many years ago).

Information on the differences between car and trailer tyres.

https://www.trailertek.com/blog/post/yo ... 9ca7c77af7

Just a quick glance says that trailer tyres offer less grip and have much thicker sidewalls, which will obviously have an adverse effect on the steering and handling if you fit them to a car.

Ask your self, is a saving of £120 worth the risk of poor handling and grip, especially if you get caught in the rain?

I have run 12 inch trailer tyres on my Morris 1300gt for around 6 years. These were fitted by mistake when I finished the car. In fairness I only do around 400 miles a year. They are ok on a motorway but are a little noisey. The handling of the with ANY spirited driving takes away the entire feel of the car. Remember though this is an ADO 16 so slightly heavier AND has hydrolastic suspension. I can tolerate them on the 1300 as it does not get driven like I do my mini, and would not entertain them on a mini and as soon as I need trailer tyres for mine or my sons trailer they will be going but it is not that easy to get 155x12 tyres in an old looking format so may end up getting 145 x 12 but I still think they would handle much better than the trailer tyres.. recently there was a very good article on tyre types, sizes and effects of pressure in the 1100 club magazine and that made my mind up to change the tyres this year, just not got round to it yet.

Ok, thanx for all the answers, I do know the guys from the mini club Mexico and I cant tell you we all suffer from the same issue. I guy from the club sold me a set of new Camac tyres that had as sparing but the only way to get a set of new ones is pay the extra cost of importation or knowing a guy who may have some vacations in the US and bring them with him, so I'm just looking for new options.

thanx

Hi,
load rating is 84 and speed index is N (up to 140km/h).
These have much stiffer sidewalls and I would not recommend them to use on a Mini even on a 850.

Try these from Minispares if you can’t find anything locally.

Danke shon Mini1960. Who confirms that they are not illegal to use on your car. They might handle like crap, are noisy but they're legal and on that basis, some might say - not me you understand - that if they are EU compliant, then by default they are safe. Not my cup of tea though!

Smacks of running racing tyres on the road - just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
The CR65 Dunlops on Gertie cannot be sold for road use as they are racing tyres and don't have the same sidewall strength that a road tyre does.
However, using them on the road is fine as long as they meet the minimum tread depths as that is all that can be checked/fined for.
(They're ghastly on the road anyway...)
Metric is for people who can't do fractions.
