Pressure Plate versions

Post by minime998 »

Hi,

I have been trying to work out issues with my 1968 Mk2 998 Cooper. The issues are engine stalling when clutch pressed and the clutch not disengaging at all. I fear it could be the thrust/crank bearings (?) looking at similar posts.

I have taken the engine back out of the car and removed the flywheel. It looks like the clutch may have been stuck in place looking at the 'rust marks' being on both the pressure plate and flywheel, and has not evidence of the clutch moving at all against the flywheel, however I could press down the clutch pedal.

Checking the pressure plate it is the '2A3509' which looks to be wrong for my engine (from what I can see its for a Mk1 mini, and states not cooper). Would an incorrect pressure plate potentially cause the 2 issues?

Any help or advice would be great. The engine looks to have been rebuilt, but this was likely 10 years ago and has stood unused out of the car since. (I only bought the car as a project in bits about 6 month ago so its all an unknown state.

Thanks

Michael

Is the primary gear free Michael? I ask as these can get their oil ways blocked up and the symptoms sound similar?

You’ll be able to press the clutch pedal if the friction is rusted to the flywheel or the backplate. Sounds like you’ve found your problem.

no related to your issue as i had clutch slip with all good component parts .. my slip issue was someone in the past (not me )had put in the three bolts that hold the pressure strip springs that were just a wee bit too long & they touched the back plate causing the clutch to just slightly slip when under load.
when you re-build it will be worth checking those bolt lengths if you decide to change the pressure plate.

Thanks all,

Yeah the primary gear is free and seems to be in tolerance.

Im hoping it is just the clutch being rusted up, fingers crossed. Im just trying to get a correct pressure plate then will try it,

thanks

Calver says to avoid the 2A3509 pressure plate (no reason given).

I note from a simple Google search that it appears to be for the early coil spring type clutch and not the diaphragm type that you would be using.

Just a follow up to say thanks!

I replaced the pressure plate and clutch and its all working as it should. Im not sure if it was the pressure plate or the clutch being rusted to the flywheel though, but its all working.

Thanks
