Timing chain in a simplex kit

Post by moita »

Hi all,

Hope someone can help on this :)

I have a simplex kit, which the cam gear is NOS with 2 tensioners rubber rings. When I fit a new minispares chain in it it does not settle properly, I mean, only some teeth are ok then starts to feel pressure that makes them pop-out. If I use my old gear from the car happens quite the same. Does this happen to any of you? My old chain+old wheel settle nicely together.

For 850 engine, what are you people using when using simplex cam/crank gears? As they seem to not be no longer available cam gear with tensioners rings. I bought a kit from minispares but they just have 2 gears and a chain, no tensioners!

Thank you,

Nuno Moita

It sounds like the chain maybe 10 mm instead of 3/8".

Thank you, Spider ! Probably it can explains the issue.

Should I use the minispares simplex kit, which does not have rubber bands on the cam wheel ? So, will be without any tensioners (tension-less), as it is a 850 engine, not later type with the tensioner apart.

As I was not happy the the issue, I am also considering in swaping for duplex chain, even if too much for this 850 STD engine.

The original simplex set-up was famous for rattling noises and new rubber tensioners did not last very long before rattling again.
I had the standard simplex set on my 1100 mini then changed to the duplex set-up (like the Cooper S). It was much quieter even without any tensioner.

There are 2 hex headed screws under the crankshaft gear that have to be changed to countersunk headed screws for clearance if you change to duplex.

Hi Bill,

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, already purchase those countersunk screws to give clearance to the crank teethed wheel. I will most probably change to duplex chain system.

Regardless of what engine it is, I nearly always fit a duplex set.

I have fitted a few simplex sets to competition engines when chasing that last 1/10th, but that's the only time I have fitted them.
