Diff side cover bushing clearance

Post by cmiller »

Getting ready to fit new bushings to diff side covers. Yoke type. Can't find any specs on the bored finished size. Any info anywhere or what are peoples ideas. I am thinking .001-.002 clearance.

Chris , I’ve had issues with some machine shops machining these individually and not getting them centered. . I now have a machined alloy block which I bolt a diff cover to each side.
Then align ream through both diff covers .

Hi Chris
My local engineering shop ream them to 1.251”. As stated a couple of thou clearance verses the diameter of the inner yoke as a custom fit will ensure no oil leaks.

I have been been collecting side covers for years and decided to run a batch. I started by removing grease and spraying all with paint stripper. Removed the seals and pressed the bushings out. Then glass beaded the parts and wire brushed. Pressed in new bushings and bolted side covers to a diff cover. Using a king pin mandrel in the Sunnen rod machine I hone the bushings inline. Flipping end for end and checking with dial gauge looking for .001 to .0015 clearance. I paid a helper $10. and hour to clean, strip paint, glass bead wire brush and press apart. I pressed new bushings and did all machine work. Time and parts I came up with $65. per side cover to restore. I did 30 some pair yoke and pot type combined. I have not been able to find as many HS side covers. I am lining up to run a small batch of them. Steve (CTR)
