Wiper wheelbox thread

Post by Peter Laidler »

Anyone out there in forumland tell me what the thread form/TPI is on the wiper wheelboxes and nuts.

Want to turn up some stainless nuts to improve the sloppy originals.

And while we're here, are the wheelbox axle spindles rivetted or a press fit? Can I assume that if they're a press fit, then it's a press fit into the toothed rear wheel.

Got them running smoothly but anyone any idea how to get grease into the spindle shaft

Lot of Q's, hope for some answers

5/8" 26tpi BSCY is what I used to rebuild my wiper w/boxes with new brass barrels. You'll find the spline count on the shaft is different either end and the spline diameter for the 22T gear is too big to pass through the barrel bore. They pressed the gear on first, fitted into the barrel and then fitted the wiper arm spline, and both ends were peened over. I never had much success removing and refitting the w/arm spline to the shaft without breaking them.
Drop your wheel boxes into some hot oil to lube them.

Just been advised by the 'Guru' that if you have the eight sided nut wheel boxes the thread is different. 5/8"X 24 tpi UNEF for those.

8 sided nut wheelboxes Bob....., tell us more. The wrong TPI from 24 to 26 or vice verca could REALLY spoil your day. The problem as I've found on Clever Trevors '66 car is that the threads on the alloy barrel become difficult to define. Do I make a slightly undersize die-nut Bob?

All I can say is that my original w/boxes had six sided nuts and one was an early version in brass and the other corroded ally, when I made the new barrels the original six flat nut fitted ok.

A zillion thanks Bob. Your pics were the answer. I'll make a v-slightly undersize-die nut to clean the threads and stainless hex nuts to match. Shame to waste an otherwise perfect pair of wheelboxes. Thanks again
