MK1 Cooper S Air Filter Assembly
Just finishing up my engine compartment.
I am attempting to fit the air cleaner assembly and was surprised to see it does not fit!
There is not enough room to simply slide it onto the elbows.
What am I missing?
Do I need to remove parts of the carb to allow for clearance?

If it helps, my MK2 is tight with a capital T. Originally, it was not helped by having 10mm carb spacers. Life got easier when I removed them. I put the base on first, then fit the lid, it gives a little more room but unless someone knows something I don't you might scratch the base of it.

I have removed the lid but still tight. I may be able to force on but wanted to check with the forum first.
One of the pictures does show the spacers. Are they required?
Getting the spring attached to the bottom of the air filter assembly should also be fun. Any tips on that as well?

Have you tried removing the carb dampers? I have to do this with my JanSpeed airbox, but it is a deeper box. This lets me tilt the box enough to clear the elbow studs.
Don’t remember having any issue with the stock box?

Removing the dampers does not allow the assembly to slip on.
If I remove the dashpot themselves that should work.
This would also give me a more room to attach the spring.
I did not want to remove things that should not be removed (if that is not normal).
Any idea why I am having this problem?
I was expecting this to be “easy”!

Perhaps loosen the bolts to the air horns a little so that it can find it’s natural resting point. If you have them a little off line it can make it hard to get the box in
In regards to the spring you’ll find many cars have all 3 springs pointed downwards to the heatshield as it’s a pain otherwise to get the airbox off

The only other thing I can think of is that the airbox snorkel is getting hung up on the the carb linkage? Not allowing you to get it on.

Well after a little pushing and jiggling the air filter assembly is now on!
Now I just have to deal with the center spring!

Er........, don't bother with the middle spring Roger. There's two others that do the job perfectly well I say!
One other thing that made fitting my air-box easier was to simply delete the steel strut that the PC valve is fixed to. There's no need for it and the valve housing sits onto the hose, held with hose clips. That way the PCV can be bent forwards to allow clearance to slip the air box unhindered.
Alas....., not one or two ideas for the concourse Stasi I fear. Have a great day Roger

When I ran my S with with the original engine and carbs I cannot recall that I had any undue problems with access etc caused by the filter box. I have retained these to return to standard at some future date and have just looked at the carbs which are as they would have been when last used and, as mentioned in another post, there are no spacers which could well account for the problem.

As mentioned in a previous post recently, there are two different air filter case depths.
I believe the shallower one was for the taller cooper s engine and the deeper one for the 997/998.
They each took different depth filter elements.
I used to have both versions but I don't know what the difference in depth was between each.
There was something like 3/16" - 1/4" difference in height.
Having said that, I dont remember having any particular difficulty fitting the deeper 998 filter box to a 1300gt engine in a mini, but it was 35+ years ago.

Pleased you got it on, it is tight. Re the different thicknesses of airboxes, I was told the thinner ones were for the Mk3.

I also have the original bulkhead insulation/soundproofing to install which will cover all wires.

I did unbolt the PCV valve to provide slightly more room.
Hopefully I will be able to install the spring but nice to know it is not required.
