Engine steady repair Bracket Kit

Post by 970s »

Hi, Could any body share the experience in using the MS engine steady repair kits? What is the difference between the 4 models? MSSK02, MSSK 03, MSSK04 and MSSK 05? I had the forward short bolt shears, does it matter if flywheel casing having a breather or not?
Thanks for your assistance and advice in advance.

Cheers

I've used the MSSK002 in the past and that worked well. Incidentally it seemed the extra space from the block meant the bushes lasted longer, presumably due to reduced heat transfer. As it's the front bolt you have broken, you'd need to use one of the ones suitable for both bolts broken - MSSK004 if no breather is fitted or MSSK005 if you have a breather. The ones for breathers include a part to offset the breather away from the bracket.

Maybe I'm missing something here and confusing my engine steady repairs a couple of years ago, (detailed in the tech pages) Surely the best way to fix something is to repair what is broken. As I read it, it's a simple case of a bolt shearing - or a thread stripping or...., then that is a fairly easy 'get-to' repair surely? What am I missing?

In my case it is actually the front thread hole is leaking coolant, I plugged it with a stud and Loctite, so it is not possible to use it to attach the short bolt with the tie bar bracket, or else the engine rocking movement will shake the stud and leak again. The bolt is not shear nor the thread stripped.
That's why I want to make use of the MS repair kit, mine engine has no breather housing fitted.

I think the Kit MSSK004 without the breather adaptor will suit my usage.

I'm sure that there are plenty others out here in forumland shouting at the screen now.

970S, respectfully, you are missing a trick here. With the engine out of the car, you can measure the depth of the front hole and with a torch, see where the water is coming from. If, as I suspect, it is coming in from a breech at the end of the hole, then it might be a simple job to clean out the hole and screw in a short UNC grub-screw sealed with lok-tite.

That will leave the open end of the now blind UNC threaded hole ready to take the oiginal screw again.

This way you are sealing the breech with a firmly fixed plug and NOT trying to fix the leak with the main screw You have fixed the problem.

Just my view and I hope others who have suffered the same problem will come on board with their ideas

Yes, This would be the easiest remedy action but the short UNC grub screw is not that common to find here in Hong Kong.
thanks again for all your valuable advice.

Back onto the original question.

The repair kits sold by MS were all made by the same "little old man" who designed them in the 1960's & has been making them is small batches since. They are all really great solutions to problems many members have come across & although sometimes there are different or better ways of doing it, they are very well designed, very well made & offer a solution when an easier option is not available.

Sorry just a little confused unless I've got this wrong but the engine steady bolts are UNF thread or am I missing something here?
