SU Needle selection, understanding numbers..
As above really, does anyone know if there is a logical way of choosing a needle based in its number?
So, say if I start with a number 7 needle for an HS4 (unsprung) and I want to keep same bottom and midrange, but make top end richer is there a way of choosing that based on number, or is it just to Mintylambs http://www.mintylamb.co.uk/suneedle/ very handy comparison chart ?
Even with the three letter needles i can’t/seem to find a pattern…..
Any ideas please

Looking at the specs in the SU catalogue and using mintylamb try CP4, BG and MME as a start.

There is no pattern.....
This is hands down the best of all the SU needle comparison programs......A bit difficult to use, you MUST read the READ ME stuff first......

I think there are probably multiple series of needles with some logical structure. But when you put them altogether it’s madness.
Minty lamb works for me to compare them.

I've got a 69 Mini with a 1046, Cooper Head and a four on the floor.

How well, or not, do you guys rate WinSU?
The needle recommendations are way off in my limited experience, but the needle graphs appear good.

The needles program, which was written by one of the users of the forum is the most comprehensive su comparison I’ve used. It’s a bit to get your head around, but it can also suggest needles based off current needles. It also compares annular area (the difference in area between two circles) rather than just the circumference which is a better way to compare

I'm really pleased that someone other than me knows that Ian's "Needles" program has been available o the MK1 site for probably 10 years or more
It was actually the first place it was available anywhere!
https://mk1-performance-conversions.co. ... l_carb.htm
While the mintylamb program is undoubtedly easy to use the amount of info & things you can do are insignificant when compared to what Ian's "Needles" program will.
Yes, it takes some getting your head round, but it is worth it in the end.
There have been no updates since 2018, but Ian decided that it had been developed as far as it could & when the likes of Burlen SU started using it he decided he couldn't take it any further.

Re: SU Needle selection, understanding numbers..
Its a ZIP file so the easiest way is to right click & "Save As" or "Save File".
Browsers differ.
I have just checked it on 3 computers & 2 different browsers it downloads OK on all of them.
Try downloading the attached files below.

Re: SU Needle selection, understanding numbers..
OOPs, skipped a post while typing, those direct links you posted, open fine.....
This reply is for the link to MKI Conversions....
Nope, just tried all that, just says file cannot be downloaded securely.....don't know what that means exactly, but, didn't try to find out.....when I try open in new tab, the tab opens up, but, immediately closes in 3 seconds......in all my 23 years on computers, I have never seen that happen....
I'm using chrome......downloads okay from the link I posted
Puters are Weird....
Did you try my link.....
Not a big issue, because, I have had it saved on my Puter for about 6 years, just strange that I can't open it from the MKI conversions site.....

Re: SU Needle selection, understanding numbers..
As I said, its a ZIP file. Some browsers don't like downloading them nowadays because any anti virus software can't check it before it's open. Wasn't an issue until about 6 months ago, I just haven't had time to change the file type that's embedded.
There is nothing wrong with the file, it's just that most browsers don't like downloading ZIPs nowadays, that's all.

All you need to do is :
Hover over picture of SU > Right Click > Select "Copy Link Address" > Paste into browser > Hit Return .......it should then down load the ZIP file

Re: SU Needle selection, understanding numbers..
I have eliminated the "troublesome" ZIP file & the ods file is now available for download with the further info available separately.

Re: SU Needle selection, understanding numbers..
Still the same on my Puter, won't download from that link....
The "right click/save link as" worked, but, is kind of cumbersome, and, not at all intuative to those of us of more modest computer skills......
BTW, my computer has never had issues with Zip Files, they always seem to open up okay.....as does that link that I posted earlier in this thread.....

Re: SU Needle selection, understanding numbers..
For anyone who has problems downloading or using "Needles" I suggest you use Mintylamb. Probably not as good, but at least it's easy to use.

Re: SU Needle selection, understanding numbers..
What's happening is that the page is served over HTTPS (encrypted), but the link is HTTP (unencrypted). Browsers will now see this as a bit unusual and may block the download when you just click on the image. If you right-click/save as, it overrides that protection.
If you're interested, in Chrome you can go to the menu (3 dots top right) -> More tools -> Developer tools. Look at the tab called 'Console' and you will see the error message explaining this.
Personally, I think the inconvenience of having to right-click is probably much less than the inconvenience to Mark of having to update all the links from http to https
