1967 MK1 Morris Budapest International Fair Show Car
Hi everyone, thank you for taking the time to look at my post. I am a Brit living in Germany. I have always wanted a Mini Mk1 but hadn't seriously looked for one.
I came to find my car through a conversation during lockdown in 2020 with my partners parents here in Dortmund, Germany. They are Hungarian, living in Germany since 1980 when they escaped the eastern bloc in quite a daring adventure. They kept their house in Budapest by transferring ownership within the family. Its quite a large house with several outbuildings, and I learned these were rented out and that there were several cars stored. I heard there was a Mini, it had an interesting past and was in a decent condition. So, as soon as it was safe to travel, I went on a road trip to Budapest with my mother in law, saw the Mini and fell in love (with the car, not the mother in law!)
I decided the car needed preserving an that we should not wait too long! So began the plan to restore the car back to its original factory condition in Hungary (at Hungarian prices...) and then bring the car to Germany.
This Mini story begins in Communist Hungary in 1967, an annual International fair was held on the City park behind Heroes Square, known locally as Budapesti Nemzetközi Vásár 1967. My Mini was part of the UK's stand at the show between 19-29th May 1967. Nobody seems to have thought much about what to do with the car afterwards, and it eventually found its way to its first real owner in October 1968, I am in contact with him via my family. The car has a few anomalies, like a speedo in MPH but fitted to a left hand drive. De-Luxe wheel trims but the car seems to be a base model, and the seats appear to be MK2, which isnt all that shocking for a show car produced at the end of the MK1 run. I am still trying to confirm with the original owner what he changed during his ownership, so any original features for the Budapest show will remain. I have applied to the British Motor Museum for a certificate of authenticity based on what they know. From what I can tell, the car is a Cowley built car, LHD, produced around March 1967. The engine appears to be the original 848cc.
The GOOD:
The shell is solid with minimal rust compared to some, the engine runs and most of the interior is present, Hydro is apparently OK (or was when the car was stored...)
The BAD:
I am not sure which interior parts are original or replaced, total bare metal rebuild will happen to ensure rust is cured, the mechanicals need a thorough service
I am looking for some help from the forum community...
Did you attend the 1967 International Fair in Budapest? Do you have any pictures of my car?
Are you in continental Europe? Can you help me source parts without paying import duties due to Brexit?!
I will shortly post more pictures, and also updates on the progress of the rebuild.

WOW!
What a very interesting car. Sounds like you & your Wife's family have had a few interesting adventure too.
It is always great when you can tie your car up to a specific bit of it's history.
I look forward to following your progress. We have lots of members both in the UK & Germany who i am sure will be a good source of info & advice.

Wow! What a find and story. I'll keep watching this story...
If you don't mind I could ask a FB-friend of mine from Hungary, who is totally nuts with Minis from an early stage on. Maybe he knows more.
His Englisch is not the best, but maybe you have someone speaking Hungarian, such to ease conversation?
Are you on Facebook? I am sure he would be interested in this story too.

Hi! Thank you for your interest! Yes, I am on Facebook, but to speak Hungarian, its better that your friend chats directly to my family. They aren't on Facebook, but I could share their email addresses with you to pass on to him. They are retired, and both had Mini's in Hungary before they left for Germany, so I guess they would love to chat to a fellow enthusiast in thier own language.MiNiKiN wrote: ↑Mon Jan 17, 2022 3:30 pm Wow! I think the car might be getting its own Instagram page shortly, so that could be fun to share too...

Re: 1967 MK1 Morris Budapest International Fair Show Car
It is (was) a club members car. Ferenc has been a a Mini fan from as early as the 70ies IIRC. The Mini-scene in Hungary prior to the fall of the iron curtain was of a manageable size I'd say. So no wonder he knows the cars by heart.
I sent you more photos from back then and the VIN and engine number. Ferenc got it all in his colection/database.

I wonder if it's worth writing a letter to the Budapest local daily newspaper asking if any of their readers recall the motor show - and the car. By default, the newspaper readers will all be old enough to remember them old days when envelopes had sticky flaps.

Thanks Marcus, I have added him on Facebook and passed his details to my Hungarian speaking family. They were also involved in the Mini scene prior to leaving the country, and they may even know each other!! Its awesome that Ferenc kept the history of the car, I am also a geekMiNiKiN wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 12:02 pm It is (was) a club members car. Hi Peter, that is a great idea. We are treating this as a family project, so I will be ordering parts and doing anything English language, the Hungarian contingent will be researching the history and managing the rebuild... The irony is that my family remembers the exhibition, they lived in Budapest at the time!! Pictures from the newspaper would be awesome... also, pictures taken by folks at the show!Peter Laidler wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 12:23 pm I wonder if it's worth writing a letter to the Budapest local daily newspaper asking if any of their readers recall the motor show - and the car. I am just another English IT guy who ended up in Germany. We were living in New York, USA just as Corona began to hit, so we came back here initially as a stop gap. If it hadn't been for Corona, I never would have been sat chatting about cars with the family and learned of the existence of this Mini!

Re: 1967 MK1 Morris Budapest International Fair Show Car
Ok so it’s update time!
Thanks to the magic of this forum, I’ve been in touch with a very nice chap who is a huge Mini enthusiast based in Hungary. Through him I’ve been emailing the last owner (via my family, in Hungarian). It’s all really exciting and he’s glad the car is going to be cherished, and ironically we do a very similar job and are the same age!!
So it seems my car was sold to the collector I bought it from 5 years ago. The former owner had the car 16 years, and I’m not sure if he bought it, or was gifted it via his family. Will find that out soon hopefully.
We’ve been able to identify the cars original colour as red, although it’s been green too! It looks like we need a whole set of interior panels. What’s in there is incomplete and early MK1. The car should have a red interior to be standard. I may also need seat frames for the front, waiting on information on that too. Feels like a whole new interior from Newton is the way forward.
Outside, the car has had some changes I wasn’t aware of, due to parts availability and basically communism. The front lights may or may not be original. The rear lights were swapped out for Polski Fiat 126 units and then swapped back.
The car is booked in for work to start in March. Aiming to do the restoration in 3-4 months and have her in Germany for the autumn. A local high end fashion boutique, Sören have asked to do a photo shoot with the car, so another thing to look forward to.
For now, here’s 2 archive pics I was lucky enough to be sent:
And here in green in the early 2000’s
