Source of HS2 air filters? Problem with currently available ones

Post by Justonemorebike »

Anyone got a source of standard HS2 single carb air filters

As picture shows the new ones are more bonding rubber than filter material..... old one from the eighties is quite a bit bigger

There’s two thicknesses of HS2 air filters.

The shallow type could be for the ADO16 1300GT type airbox and not the Cooper/S airbox .

Ahh, was it the ADO16 that had the shallower twin carb air filter box with slimmer filters. I'd always assumed it was the 1275S that had the slimmer air box due to clearance needed for the taller block.
I used to have both the slim and deep air boxes but I forgot which one used the standard single carb filter element.

As far as I’m aware it’s the ADO16 that had the slimmer airbox although not sure why. I stand to be corrected on this of course.

Certainly the ADO16 GT manifold and carbs we got for Dads VDP had the slimmer airbox but may have been changed at some point.

Seems there are 2 types GFE1038 (thin) GFE1002 42mm thick.

minispares list the thin on for both applications?

Certainly the thin one will fit the deeper box (albeit not snugly and therefore air could bypass the filter element) but not the other way round

Your Post made me measure the overall filter height needed within the full oval type HS2 twin carb which i assume is the original for the1070S .. it measures 45mm from the lower filter squash face to the top of filter squash face .. i also need a couple of the thick Filters.

MiniSpares also sell the K&N elements for the HS2, although they state they won't fit the shallower box on the MK3 S?

Also they're 50 notes each  But I guess they'll remove any replacement issues...

Maybe the mk3S had the shallower box as well.

Simon W will advise I’m sure .

Apart from having to have the car re tuned as you change the air flow characteristics

Yes that is true, add the K&N filters to the cost of your next tune...

Plus of course who's to say the filter box on any 50 year old car is the original!

Had a Cooper 998 engine on dyno. Few little tweaks, 72hp. Fitted std airbox with the Minispares 'orange' filters...67hp. Difficult to say how much is lost by drawing hot air straight from center exhaust downpipe, or from poor filters.

NOS versions of these are still easy to source on Ebay. Just search Mk1 Mini Air Filter and a few options should show up.

Why the main suppliers think that the single filter is the same as the twin carb filter I do not know.
