Steering Rack Rebuild

Hi Guys,
I'm rebuilding the steering rack on an early Mk1 car. It's now stripped down and apart from the non-existent bush at the far end from the pinion it's in good condition but the seal at the top where the pinion exits the rack is very hard and I'd like to replace it. The usual suppliers have the seals for the Mk2 rack but there's no mention of the seals for the earlier racks.
Are they still available from anywhere?

Together with Spider, we wrote a thread about rebuilding steering racks. Me the Mk2 and Spider, the Mk1 - a sort of joined-up effort! I'm not sure that the seals are different from memory. A quick read of the combined articles and look through the parts lists will confirm this

Hi Peter,
I read both yours and Spiders excellent articles before starting the strip down. Spider's article is for a post 67 rack. The rack I'm rebuilding is from a 61 car. The only seal I can find is the 88G499 which some suppliers say is for the post 67 rack. I think I might just get one of those to see if it fits.

Hi Peter,
These are the two articles that I've been using. One is yours and the other is by D Lawson and is about changing the bushes on Mk 1 racks. Within your article there is a link to Spiders article on the mini forum. I can't help you with where they are on the site as I found them on another thread where other forum members were also struggling to find them. Could they be re-posted on the 'How to" section as they are very useful.
