DELETION OF A RECENT THREAD

To anyone who has noticed the deletion of the thread entitled "Works,Broadspeed,Downton,Speedwell and Special Tuning".

I was contacted by one forum member over allegations in the thread that items he was selling on ebay were not what they appeared to be. As far as I could tell these allegations were being made by another forum member who has repeatedly made similar allegations in the past, giving the impression that there is some sort of feud running between these two members, the details of which I am not (and don't want to be) privy to. It was suggested in this communication that unless the thread was deleted I could be subject to legal proceedings.

While I believe that the actual chances of this coming about are slim as the sole financial contributor & administrator of the forum I was & am not prepared to take this risk.

In an ideal world the thing I would like to do in a situation like this is say "see you in court & let the truth be out", but over the last few months of bickering, arguing & general abuse I have received regarding my running of the site I just can't be bothered any more.

May I respectfully suggest to any members of the forum who are not happy with the way I run it, go somewhere else. Don't bother telling me about your woes because to be honest it's not my problem. Finally, if the next 6 months of administration are as miserable as my last 6 the MK1 forum will not be here much longer.

To be honest Mark I doubt there's a forum out there that hasn't experienced the same sort of issues, seems to be the nature of these things, it's just a shame you're always the one getting dragged in to referee which I'm sure is not what you got into this for.

I'm not sure an independant moderator would work and such a shame one would even be required after all this time but they do seem to be necessary else where.

Please don't think about packing in, this forum is a massive encyclopedia of knowledge which i have and will continue to draw upon without which i would be lost. I'm a bit of a novice on the mini scene but please don't let a couple of people spoil it for the rest of us. Keep up the good work Mark i for one really appreciate it thanks Steve

I was under the impression that a lot of brave people fought and died for the right of free speach in this country, to those who feel the need to make threats legal or violent it makes myself wonder what they are trying to hide, if what they are selling is straight up why not use this wonderful medium to address their critics and put them straight and stop the doubt.

unfortunatly, as in any area of life, once money can be made, people with less morals than the normal honest folk get involved and spoil what, for many on here is simply a hobby & enjoyment of what truthfully is a fairly cheap mass produced car.

i guess it happens in every area, from snake oil sellers, to slimming tea, to buggatti gp chassis number clones.

the important thing, is that there is a place where people who are unsure can freely ask for advice, on matters that many people are very knowledgeble about and get honest answers that have no edge to them.

it still amazes me that people think that in the age of the internet that they can try and rewrite the history of such a popular subject - maybe in the early 1990's is was possible to make claims that where impossible to verify, but now, with the level of interest and the access people have to scanners / ebay / google / forums it must surely be nearly impossible to hope to get away?

In light of all this, and having heard from Mark, can I make a suggestion? a 'Mk1 forum code of conduct' if you like:

If you are thinking of buying something off the internet or elsewhere and are genuinely curious / unsure / concerned about its authenticity, feel free to ask the opinion of the many on here who may be able to help, and generally do so willingly.

If you are selling things either directly or on the web, feel free to let others know, but on the understanding that any reasonable questions should be treated as such, and answered in the same vein.

If a vendor and buyer (or anyone else) fall out, please bugger off and fall out privately.

If you see a 'ringer' on ebay or another obviously fake item: to be honest, we all know they are out there, and the old 'caveat emptor' applies. Let the buyer do their research themselves, as above. posting links to such items may only fuel the fire by highlighting them to people who might be prepared to buy a repro, which means more sell, so more are made etc etc and you might accidentally buy one down the line when it's less shiny!

Didn't our grannies always tell us " if you can't say something nice, it's better to say nothing"?

If people start falling out, Poor old Mr Forster ends up getting it in the neck, he gets hacked off, shuts the site and we all have to go and talk to real people, or to the the garage and actually work on the cars, and it's too cold for that.........

So, this is merely a suggestion, not aimed at any specific post or person, follow it if you like or not.

without wishing to re-fan the embers, I took the the origins of that thread to be in pointing out that an item on sale was not genuine, rather than asing if it was. Quite different.

I conscious however that I don't want this thread to become a 'replacement' for that which was removed, so perhaps it should be locked now as Mark's original point has been made?

Well said Al. People are far too uptight. Stop sweating this stuff that really doesn't matter. Let seller and buyer make their own decisions and leave poor Mark and this website alone. I really enjoy this sight until all this crap starts and then it spirals into the teenage bitch fest. Be nice to everybody!
