Interior light

Post by redrobbo »

hi peeps,
Just a quick one hopefully.
Did all mk1 Mini's have an interior light.
The reason i ask is i'm about to order a new wiring harness from Autosparks (if someone thinks a different company is better then please let me know) It was built on 18th September 62,base model but with a interior light and somewhere in my head i dont think base models came with one?

My 1962 has lights in the rear bins and in the binnacle no interior light on roof or switches on the door post, it’s a deluxe if that helps, July 1962 was registration date

Thanks Daz.
My Mini was registered at the Patrick Motors the Austin dealers in Birmingham and i have a theory that it was purchased my a production line worker and had his mates put extra options on it for him
So it is a base model with interior light but no door switches, opening side windows with piano hinges and the 2 tone red/grey seats,2 chrome door kick plates, 2 sun visors instead of one and 3 chrome ash trays but no companion box lights.
On the Heritage certificate the only extra was a heater.
It might have come with bumper over riders and the tubular extensions but i will never know.
This person has a lot to answer to lol

Door pillar switches for the interior light were not introduced until September 1964 whatever the model.

If a car was purchased by a BMC employee on the employee scheme they weren't normally shipped out to a dealer.
The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who do not possess it.

Interesting comment Simon.

I only mentioned the switches due to Daz1968 mentioning them. Not got a clue when they happened.

Maybe it was purchased by a family member or friends etc , we will never know, or will we??

Don't dvla do a sort of report on a cars owners history??

When i worked for MG Rover we had to pick our cars up from Chipping Warden until the last 2-3 years when they where all picked up in house.

Employee scheme New Car .. possible the extras came mysteriously a few days later for the new owner to fit at home ..on occasion some employee cars got special attention to the Paintwork somehow all done in the Factory.. perhaps why BMC lost money on Minis

A bit OFFTOPIC:
Haha, that's nothing.
"Employee scheme New Car" here in Graz at the G-Wagon production line looked roughly like this:
Employees "sourced" parts at the production line or had them delivered to their homes, where they built the whole "employee new car" themselves.
Quite a few of these Puch G magically spawned this way, until the crooks got busted.
Yes I am a nerd: I am researching the Austrian Mini-racing scene of the 60s and 70s :ugeek:

Did the switch in the speedo binnacle not turn on the dome light on the headliner? One switch did speedo light and the other did the dash and dome lights. I may be wrong...🤔

My 62 morris traveller had a torpedo dome light with black switch but no door pillar pins to activate it. I thought it was done by the switch physically on it, or by the binnacle switch.

None of that is mentioned on the heritage certificate. Just that it had a heater and dry cell battery.

I am recommissioning a long-sat 1961 850 and it appears there is no provision in the harness for wiring for an interior light OR companion lights. If there was to be companion bin lights, would the wiring come from the rear loom down the B-pillars?

Most places are a better option one wiring harnesses than Autosparks. Their delivery time is HORRENDOUS!

Usually Minispares & Bull Motif have good stocks of pretty much all looms on the shelf. These are made Autosparks but available from stock.
