Seat Belts

Post by Tops1e »

Hello,
I need to buy seat belts for my 1964 Cooper S which is now nearly restored. Can anyone suggest what type and from where to buy them. I have seen so many but I am unable to choose a set that compliments the car.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

These are the original grey Britax belts I had restored from my March 65 Cooper S.

I had them done at FDTS, who can also supply them. Cannot recommend them high enough

Correct new ones come up on eBay once in a while but tend to be very expensive to my eye.

Unfortunately I "lost" my seat belts along with other bits through circumstances during my divorce.

However this led me to look at more modern inertia reel belts,I remember using the old type both in my mini and frogeye sprite but the ends always seemed to be in the wrong place or I was sitting on them and it often took a bit of time to fasten them before I move off. Also for me they always looked untidy.

I bought a set of inertial belts as I remember from MiniSpares which were not overly expensive, my car is red and white on the outside and black inside I therefore opted for a red set which complement the exposed interior internal red metalwork and my black with red cross striped front sports seats.

Being a 67 S it appeared to have had all of the necessary fixing points and the belts went in relatively easily. They look nice, are unobtrusive, easy to fasten and allow me freedom of movement. As a restoration would not suit everybody I suppose but personally I am very pleased that I choose to fit them.

Speaking about seat belts, I assume that all the seatbelts back those days in the 850s were black. Is it correct?

Back then seat belts were black or grey, don’t forget the world was all in black and white until the 1970s.

And don’t forget there’s no such thing as a factory belt for this era... except maybe for the odd Wolvo.

Some cars (my 850) did come with dealer fitted belts. Mine were silver grey. And they worked ..as I proved when I managed to roll my Mini a month after picking it up.

At the time they weren’t a popular option. Most Fathers viewed the lad picking up their daughter in a car fitted with seat belts with a great deal of suspicion and distrust; the boyfriend was obviously some kind of hoon intent on taking his daughter in harm’s way.

Cheers, Ian

FDTS are great & can offer some 60's "style" belts, but if you want correct ones then it's ebay I'm afraid.

Here is an original Britax belt and I am surprised it has no bids. Seems like a good deal to me. too bad it is only for one belt.

a little over 4 hours till auction ends
