rev limiter

Post by deiseman »

Hi everybody,
I'm rebuilding a 1293 genuine cooper "s" engine which will be subjected to a certain amount of "abuse".Not wanting it to self destruct, has anybody got suggestions of a possible rev limiter?.
Thanks all,
deiseman.

As simple as this type of rotor arm https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/2129666186 and you can modify the weight yourself if required.

I think you can set a rev limit with some electronic ignitions like 123 or CSI as well.
Of course I know what a dipstick is, you get called something often enough you look it up!

How about a tach and lift off when it hits the red line.

I always used to use a Micro Dynamics limiter on my race cars. The exact model I used is not listed above, but there are many alternatives that look like they'd do the job.

Did used to think along those lines but then found 10,000rpm comes up pretty quickly when you’re airborne, I’ve since fitted an Omex Clubman revlimiter

Weaker valve springs? Stay running on points?
I've got a 69 Mini with a 1046, Cooper Head and a four on the floor.

I would agree with the sentiment as already expressed using the rev counter or even your ear to change gear or lift off.

A genuine S engine if properly especially with the benefit of balancing and lightening is built for a bit of abuse. I have a tuned S motor which proved very free revving but was a bit oily from the top end. During a head rebuild last winter I replaced the valve springs these are clearly not the same spec as previous as I have lost approx 1000 revs. Not a problem most of the time but there are occasions when I would dearly love to have that extra to hand or foot.

I believe they Lotus Cortina rally cars used one like this back in the 60's.

Just remember the rev limiter doesn’t safe the engine from over excited down shifts, no matter how many people tell you otherwise.
