Windscreen plastic locking strip help.

I have fitted the front and rear screens today and hoping to fit the plastic locking strips tomorrow, is it advisable to fit the locking strips leaving a small gap between the two ends to allow for any expansion in length or should the ends meet at the joint?

Butt the two ends up together as it does shrink over time. And don't forget the little finisher to cover the join.

Was the plastic locking strip joint cover/finisher fitted to MK1-2 or is it just advisable to fit one, does anyone have a part number for the joint cover in shiny finish please?

The joint cover was fitted from 1985, part number JPC2017.

With regard to to joint position for the windscreen locking strip, should it be central at the top or bottom of the windscreens?
I have seen the joint in both positions but which is correct to be as original?

I always put it to the top. It probably doesn’t matter greatly as it’s not sealing anything.

I usually cut the ends about 1/4” too long and force them in - allows the strip to settle/shrink without a gap opening up. Never bother with the finisher.
