Chinesium Rods

If you’ve ever been tempted to buy the cheap billet rods on eBay, watch this first:

I had the same issue with BL`s finest
With zero deck height the pistons were 0.0025" higher on on side so I don`t suppose anyone would notice 0.012" down the bore ?

Interesting that the little end pin bores were misaligned but not sure that his solution is necessarily sound engineering - yes the top of the piston is now flat to the face of the block (and that may alleviate/prevent what I assume has been head gasket issues leading to the strip-down) but surely the piston is still running up and down the bore on a tilt causing the piston to bore clearance to vary down the length of the skirt.

As for if that will cause issues, I've no idea but I would have thought boring and bushing the little ends square and then taking the same amount off the top of the piston right the way across keeping the top face square to the pin bore would be a better engineered solution.

He does say that this is a race engine with low hours expected and that this is a ‘quick fix’ to get the car back out again. A better resolution will be done in time.

Sounds right to me.
Would it not be better to change the rods....if they are the issue ?
Also the rings will be at a slight angle to the bore, a very small angle, but rings are hard and might turn ring leading edge into cutters....
Interesting Vid` though....

What a bodge, just get the little ends corrected by rebushing. Oh it’s only a race engine…. :|

Just a quick calculation using 71.12 bore size (20 thou oversize) and the 0.6mm discrepancy.

0.6/71.12= 0.00843. Using a sin table gives an angle of approximately 0.5 degrees (30 minutes for the pedants out there) of error in the pin bore.

If the pin bore is wrong, it raises the question, what else.........”but its only a race engine”

When does it is not important that everything is correct if not in a race engine?!?
I promise i won't buy another MkI...

In my opinion it's making as much work to machine the pistons as bushing the rods correct...

Probably yes, seems peculiar to choose the piston solution. Surely, if you machine the piston you are getting over the problem, not correcting it- your piston crown is no longer inline with the piston body, as designed.

Just seems bad engineering practice, especially on a race engine, where you trying to get performance with reliability - to build in an anomaly, seems odd to me.

I suspect it depends on whether there is enough meat in the small end to stand bushing to correct the alignment without weakening the rod. The real solution would be to replace the rods with some better quality ones but I guess budget and impatience was part of the equation.

When I posted this it wasn’t to criticise the piston machining which was just a quick fix so they could get the engine ready to race again (it made over 130hp by the way) it was to point out the danger of buying cheap rods.
As someone else said, who knows if the other dimensions are in tolerance or if the material specs are ok?

If it made 130 bhp without going bang at least the material spec has potential :D

It’s very difficult to get anything that’s not manufactured in china
People buy it because they think it’s cheap
It’s usually shite and now because people have bought this shite companies that manufactured quality products have stopped trading
Globalisation has moved manufacturing away from the UK to Eastern European countries thanks to the Fucking EU (new Land Rover Defender manufactured in Slovakia 😡)and the Far East
Not so cheap when we’re trillions of pounds in debt and we don’t manufacture anything anymore and we’ve no manufacturing industry
Nothing to export
When Maggie was in power monthly balance of payment figures were published and people were encouraged buy British
They dare not publish them now
What has happened to the country ?
Mass immigration
Over 33% school population BAEM !!!
Indigenous population minority in less than 30 years !!!

BMC were first off the mark building their cars abroad in Belgium Italy and Spain. Why? To get a commercial advantage. Whether it’s to avoid potential trade tariffs, exploit cheaper labour or lower infrastructure costs, once a company achieves the financial clout to do this they will. It’s called capitalism and the British largely invented it. Something to be proud of there then.

I really think that this has started changing, so many reasons not to manufacture in China now.
Carbon footprint, H&S, Worries about further China domination, Transport costs, Quality issues, Slavery, Rising middle class, theft of IP, plus, plus………

Out of interest, does anyone know how much these rods weigh in comparison to say MED or Swift H beam ?
